Flextronics may buy Japanese plant

NEC is reducing costs as chip prices slump.

The third-largest chipmaker, which had a loss of ?29.8 billion in the six months to September, will cut 5,400 employees by March 2002.

NEC has three plants in Japan that make equipment for new mobile-phone services using technology called wideband code-division multiple access, or W-CDMA.

Fujitsu Ltd and Matsushita Communication Industrial Co, two other producers of W-CDMA equipment in Japan, each have one plant in the country.
