Radio program caters to needs of Beijing cabbies

DRIVING MUSIC Being a cabbie in Beijing is a tough way to make ends meet, but one radio program helps drivers get through their day

"What is the drivers' favorite request?" he gave as a sample.

"Take me to the airport!" he answered, using the exaggerated English of a tourist, a sure-fire long ride and high fare.

Liang said every time she took a cab she asked about the show. The drivers always know about it, she said, and most are fans. But some are more surly.

"They say, `The music isn't bad, but you can't solve our real problems,"' she said. "That is true. We are just the media, and not the government."
