Nokia plans to fire up to 1,000 workers

BOTTOM LINE The biggest maker of cellphones is lowering costs after recently cutting its forecast for second-quarter sales growth by half to less than 10 percent

Ericsson's operating margin fell to 4 percent from 14 percent. The phone-equipment unit contributed a quarter of Nokia's sales before interest and taxes in the first quarter.

Nokia in the first quarter booked 133,000 euros in sales per employee, compared with Ericsson's 57,000 euros per employee.

Ericsson has over 107,000 employees.
