NEC mulls cellphone plants in Europe

HANDSETS In an effort to woo customers with faster wireless Internet access, the company wants to build assembly plants in Europe to be closer to the market

BLOOMBERG , TOKYO

"It would be best for NEC and its domestic peers to share costs to build plants in East Europe," said Hiroyasu Nishikawa, an analyst at Cosmo Securities Co, who has a "buy" rating on the stock. "They have a common enemy in Europe -- Nokia." Rival Matsushita Communication, the fifth-largest mobile phone maker, is also pushing production in Europe.

NEC produced 5.5 million mobile phones in the UK in the year ended in March, or 25 percent of total output. The company is also building a plant in the Czech Republic, which will start production in October.
