The leader of Hamas on Friday condemned “extra-judicial executions,” in the wake of the killing of Osama bin Laden.

“While we disapprove of the methods of al-Qaeda, particularly actions directed against innocent civilians, we are opposed to the United States or any other party having recourse to extra-judicial executions,” Khaled Meshaal said in a statement.

He also repeated his denunciation of the circumstances of bin Laden’s death and burial, attacking “the spilling of Arab and Muslim blood and the violation of human dignity as happened during the death of Osama bin Laden and the immersion of his body.”

Soon after bin Laden’s death was announced, Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas said: “We condemn any killing of a holy warrior or of a Muslim and Arab person and we ask God to bestow his mercy upon him.”

US Department of State spokesman Mark Toner called Haniyeh’s remarks “outrageous.”

“Bin Laden was a murderer and terrorist,” he said.
