A man was shot dead and six were wounded in bomb attacks on two karaoke lounges in a hotbed of southern Thailand's Muslim insurgency, police said yesterday.

The homemade bombs exploded within minutes of each other on Saturday night at lounges in Narathiwat Province's Tak Bai district, scene of an anti-government rally two years ago in which 85 Muslim protesters died at the hands of security forces, said police Lieutenant Thepsin Sahadhud.

Police rushed to the scenes of the explosions when another homemade bomb planted on the roadside exploded, Thepsin said.

"The third bomb was apparently targeted at police, but fortunately no one was injured [in the attack]," he said.

One bomb hidden under a sofa in the James Bond lounge injured two police officers, and the second went off at the Regency Karaoke lounge about 50m away, police said. Four were hurt in the second.

In a separate incident yesterday, rubber plantation worker Yuzoe Maha was fatally shot in Narathiwat Province, said police Lieutenant Raden Temyod of Sungai.
