A picture made available yesterday shows an elderly Uighur man resting in his chair on Friday while children play in a renovated part of the old town of Kashgar, in China’s Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. Kashgar old town’s historic labyrinth of earthen mud houses is rapidly being demolished and revamped in a massive government plan to transform the city that began in 2009. The Chinese government, citing unsafe structures and non-compliance with fire and earthquake safety regulations, has razed and rebuilt more than two-thirds of the old city, relocating thousands of its mainly Uighur residents.May 28, 2013
