FREE AT LAST

Released prisoners make their way out of Insein prison in Yangon yesterday. Myanmar’s new government began freeing about 14,000 prisoners and commuting the sentences of thousands more yesterday in an amnesty critics dismissed as a token gesture aimed at improving its global image. Activists said the vast majority of those freed were common criminals and few were political prisoners, which number at least 2,200.May 18, 2011
