Toronto police are looking into whether a double stabbing at a military recruitment center might be terror related.
Police Chief Mark Saunders said a man walked into a center in the northern part of Toronto at about 3:30pm on Monday, pulled out a knife and attacked a uniformed Canadian Forces member at the front desk.
Saunders said others were able to take down the suspect, but a second Canadian Forces member was stabbed in the process. The injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
He said the suspect made unspecified comments that led police to look into a possible terror connection.
“Certain comments were made by this gentleman while he was held in custody before the police arrived, which has caused some concern. This has caused us to look at the motive beyond the attack,” Saunders said.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Canada’s intelligence service have also been contacted.
Saunders said charges against the 27-year-old man are pending. He said it could have been worse.
“We are very fortunate that the Canadian Forces, through their training, responded... Had they not reacted, it would have been much more serious,” Saunders said.
RCMP spokesman Harold Pfleiderer said they are working with Toronto police to determine the circumstances surrounding the stabbing.
“The information we have at this point leads us to believe this is an isolated incident and we wish to reassure the public that there is no imminent threat to public safety at this time,” Pfleiderer said in an e-mail.
Canadian Minister of Defense Harjit Sajjan tweeted that his thoughts are with the injured soldiers and with those who responded bravely in the face of danger.
In 2014, a shooter killed a Canadian soldier at a war memorial in Ottawa and then stormed the Canadian Parliament before being shot dead.
The man had taken issue with Canada’s involvement in war in Afghanistan and against the Islamic State group.
The attack came two days after a man described as an “ISIL [Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant]-inspired terrorist” ran over two soldiers in a parking lot in Quebec, killing one and injuring the other before being shot dead by police.
The man had been under surveillance by Canadian authorities, who feared he had militant ambitions and seized his passport when he tried to travel to Turkey.
Canada’s new Liberal government has ended airstrikes against the Islamic State group, but has tripled the number of soldiers that train Kurdish soldiers in Northern Iraq.
SEEKING CHANGE: A hospital worker said she did not vote in previous elections, but ‘now I can see that maybe my vote can change the system and the country’ Voting closed yesterday across the Solomon Islands in the south Pacific nation’s first general election since the government switched diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to Beijing and struck a secret security pact that has raised fears of the Chinese navy gaining a foothold in the region. The Solomon Islands’ closer relationship with China and a troubled domestic economy weighed on voters’ minds as they cast their ballots. As many as 420,000 registered voters had their say across 50 national seats. For the first time, the national vote also coincided with elections for eight of the 10 local governments. Esther Maeluma cast her vote in the
Nearly half of China’s major cities are suffering “moderate to severe” levels of subsidence, putting millions of people at risk of flooding, especially as sea levels rise, according to a study of nationwide satellite data released yesterday. The authors of the paper, published by the journal Science, found that 45 percent of China’s urban land was sinking faster than 3mm per year, with 16 percent at more than 10mm per year, driven not only by declining water tables, but also the sheer weight of the built environment. With China’s urban population already in excess of 900 million people, “even a small portion

HYPOCRISY? The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday asked whether Biden was talking about China or the US when he used the word ‘xenophobic’ US President Joe Biden on Wednesday called for a hike in steel tariffs on China, accusing Beijing of cheating as he spoke at a campaign event in Pennsylvania. Biden accused China of xenophobia, too, in a speech to union members in Pittsburgh. “They’re not competing, they’re cheating. They’re cheating and we’ve seen the damage here in America,” Biden said. Chinese steel companies “don’t need to worry about making a profit because the Chinese government is subsidizing them so heavily,” he said. Biden said he had called for the US Trade Representative to triple the tariff rates for Chinese steel and aluminum if Beijing was
