The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on worshipers at a Shiite mosque in northern Bangladesh, the US-based monitoring organization SITE said yesterday.
The attackers entered the mosque in Shibganj, about 125km north of Dhaka, during early evening prayers on Thursday and opened fire on the gathered worshipers before fleeing.
Television footage showed the heavily guarded Shiite mosque with broken windows and blood stains on the floor.

Police said the muezzin had been killed and three worshipers wounded in the shooting, a rare attack on minority Shiite Muslims in the mainly Sunni nation.
Detectives say they are questioning two people over the shooting, although they had not been formally arrested.
“We have picked up two Sunni locals for interrogation in connection to the shootout,” Shibganj police chief Ahsan Habib told reporters.
The SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors Muslim militant activity, said on its Web site that the Islamic State group had claimed responsibility in a message posted on Twitter.
Bangladeshi authorities have previously said there is no evidence that the Islamic State is active in the nation.
However, the group has claimed a series of attacks in Bangladesh, including the shooting and wounding of an Italian priest and the killing of a Sufi Muslim this month.
Security had been stepped up across the nation after two top opposition leaders were hanged on Sunday following their conviction for war crimes committed during the 1971 independence conflict against Pakistan.
One of the men executed was Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, who was the official No. 2 in the country’s biggest Islamic party, Jamaat-e-Islami.
Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, a senior figure in the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was hanged at the same time at Dhaka’s Central Prison in the capital’s old quarter.
The attackers in Shibganj struck a day after police shot dead a top Muslim militant accused of hurling grenades at the nation’s main Shiite shrine in Dhaka last month, killing two people.
The bombing was believed to be the first attack on Shiites in Bangladesh, though banned militant groups have killed more than a dozen Sufi Muslims and attacked Hindus and Christians in the past two years.
Speaking after the latest attack, local Shiite leader Mir Zulfiqar Ali said that there was growing sense of fear among the community.
“We are now concerned, as it was the second time an attack came on us. All we can do is to condemn such attacks and ask for extra security from the government at our mosques and shrines,” he told reporters.
Police have pledged to step up security in the wake of the attack.
“Security has been beefed up at all important Shiite installations including their mosques in Dhaka ahead of the Muslim’s Friday prayer,” Dhaka police spokesman Muntashirul Islam told reporters.
Bangladesh has been roiled by violence for much of the past three years since a domestic tribunal began delivering its verdicts on opposition figures accused of orchestrating massacres during the 1971 war.
Nearly half of China’s major cities are suffering “moderate to severe” levels of subsidence, putting millions of people at risk of flooding, especially as sea levels rise, according to a study of nationwide satellite data released yesterday. The authors of the paper, published by the journal Science, found that 45 percent of China’s urban land was sinking faster than 3mm per year, with 16 percent at more than 10mm per year, driven not only by declining water tables, but also the sheer weight of the built environment. With China’s urban population already in excess of 900 million people, “even a small portion

HYPOCRISY? The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday asked whether Biden was talking about China or the US when he used the word ‘xenophobic’ US President Joe Biden on Wednesday called for a hike in steel tariffs on China, accusing Beijing of cheating as he spoke at a campaign event in Pennsylvania. Biden accused China of xenophobia, too, in a speech to union members in Pittsburgh. “They’re not competing, they’re cheating. They’re cheating and we’ve seen the damage here in America,” Biden said. Chinese steel companies “don’t need to worry about making a profit because the Chinese government is subsidizing them so heavily,” he said. Biden said he had called for the US Trade Representative to triple the tariff rates for Chinese steel and aluminum if Beijing was
Beijing is continuing to commit genocide and crimes against humanity against Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in its western Xinjiang province, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a report published on Monday, ahead of his planned visit to China this week. The State Department’s annual human rights report, which documents abuses recorded all over the world during the previous calendar year, repeated language from previous years on the treatment of Muslims in Xinjiang, but the publication raises the issue ahead of delicate talks, including on the war in Ukraine and global trade, between the top U.S. diplomat and Chinese
