Bo Xilai leaves brutal anti-mafia legacy

In Fujian Province, more than 2,700 alleged mafia members were arrested last year, according to state media. In Hubei Province, more than 2,400 people have been arrested on organized crime charges since last year, according to state-run media.

“A lot of cities imitated Bo ... the results of his campaign are huge,” Li Zhuang said.

China introduced anti-mafia laws in 1997 to prevent the spread of gang organizations from Hong Kong and Macau as they returned to Beijing’s control.

However, lawyers say the courts have stretched the legal definitions beyond recognition.

“Anti-mafia charges are like a big bag, anything can be put in to pursue social stability,” Zhou said.
