Gunmen open fire at school in Karachi

AFP, KARACHI, Pakistan

Gunmen yesterday hurled a firecracker and opened fire at a primary school in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi, killing its principal and wounding eight children, police said.

The children were aged between five and 10, while the headmaster was a member of the Awami National Party, which consists mainly of ethnic Pashtun migrants from the country’s northwest, police added.

The gunmen fled on motorbikes and nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack, police official Imran Shaukat said, adding that police have started an investigation.

The attack took place in the low-income Ittehad Town neighborhood of Karachi.

Meanwhile, a suicide bomber yesterday struck a police patrol in Katalang, 50km northeast of Peshawar, killing a policeman and wounding six other people, police said.

After the bombing, the police chased an alleged accomplice and killed him in a shoot-out, police official Shafi Ullah said.

Separately, a bomb blast damaged a non-governmental organization office in Peshawar early yesterday, but caused no casualties, police said.

The bomb exploded outside the office of Sawera, an NGO working for women’s rights and voters’ education, at 4am in the upmarket area of Hayatabad, police official Faisal Murad said.
