North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has apparently regained movement in his left arm after being partially paralyzed by a stroke three years ago, a South Korean official said yesterday.
Video footage of Kim meeting a visiting Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (李克強) on Monday showed him freely moving his left hand and arm, although he was still dragging his left leg.
“Movement has returned to his left arm since May when he visited China, even if the movement is not quite natural,” a spokeswoman for Seoul’s Unification Ministry quoted the official as saying on condition of anonymity.
The Korea JoongAng Daily said Kim’s improved condition was evident in the footage aired on Tuesday by China’s state television, compared to film taken during his visit to China in May.
COMPARING FOOTAGE
The latest footage showed Kim wrapping his left hand around Li’s hand as they shook hands, and moving it freely as they talked.
At a meeting with President Hu Jintao (胡錦濤) in Beijing in May, Kim only used his right hand to move papers and his left hand dangled awkwardly.
Kim’s apparent partial recovery was also visible in August during a visit to Russia, when he was seen using his left hand to support a tray of bread and salt offered as a traditional welcoming gesture.
Analysts closely watch photographs and footage of the 69-year-old leader for clues about his health after he suffered his stroke in August 2008. Recent photos show he has regained some of the weight he lost at that time.
KEY TO SUCCESSION
Kim Jong-il has chosen his youngest son, Kim Jong-un, as successor, but the timing of the transition appears partly linked to the state of the father’s health.
Republican US lawmakers on Friday criticized US President Joe Biden’s administration after sanctioned Chinese telecoms equipment giant Huawei unveiled a laptop this week powered by an Intel artificial intelligence (AI) chip. The US placed Huawei on a trade restriction list in 2019 for contravening Iran sanctions, part of a broader effort to hobble Beijing’s technological advances. Placement on the list means the company’s suppliers have to seek a special, difficult-to-obtain license before shipping to it. One such license, issued by then-US president Donald Trump’s administration, has allowed Intel to ship central processors to Huawei for use in laptops since 2020. China hardliners

After the five-week trial, 85 others were also sentenced on

We will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed,” he said. Biden said he would not divulge secure information, but said his expectation was that an attack could come “sooner, rather than later.” Israel braced on Friday for an attack by Iran or its proxies as warnings grew of
