Winehouse album becomes biggest seller this century

‘ARTISTIC GENIUS’:Music legend Tony Bennett will lead a tribute to Britain’s Amy Winehouse at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday

A surge of interest in the music of Amy Winehouse following her death has seen her final release become the biggest selling album of the century in Britain, figures showed on Wednesday.

Winehouse’s 2006 album Back To Black has now sold 3,259,100 copies, edging ahead of the previous record holder by James Blunt, according to Official Chart Co.

Blunt’s 2005 album Back To Bedlam has sold 3,241,118 copies.

It was announced on Wednesday that music legend Tony Bennett will lead a tribute to Winehouse at an international MTV awards event in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Bennett, 85, will introduce a special section of the MTV Video Music Awards, including footage of him recording with Winehouse at Abbey Road Studios in March as they sang Body And Soul for his Duets II album.

“It was a thrill to record with Amy Winehouse and when you listen to the recording of Body And Soul, it is a testament to her artistic genius and her brilliance as one of the most honest musicians I have ever known,” Bennett said.

Winehouse, who battled with alcohol and drugs throughout her life, was found dead at her home in Camden, north London, on July 23. She was 27.

Her family said on Tuesday that toxicology tests showed no illegal substances were found in her system, although it is not yet known if any prescription drugs were detected in her blood.

A full inquest into her death is scheduled to be held on Oct. 26.
