British Prime Minister Gordon Brown issued a posthumous apology yesterday to World War II code-breaker Alan Turing, who committed suicide after he was convicted of being homosexual and sentenced to prison or chemical castration.
Brown said Turing, who took his own life in 1954, had been treated “terribly,” adding that the outcome of the war could have been different without his efforts.
Turing, often hailed for his influence in modern computing, was one of the key figures involved in cracking Nazi German codes.
Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Brown said: “On behalf of the British government, and all those who live freely thanks to Alan’s work, I am very proud to say: We’re sorry. You deserved so much better.”
“The debt of gratitude he is owed makes it all the more horrifying, therefore, that he was treated so inhumanely,” he said.
