Obama, Clinton in face-to-face debate

COMEBACK KID 2? Hillary Clinton's task in New Hampshire was reflected by the Iowa entry polls, which showed that Barack Obama beat her among women and union workers

AFP , MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE

But RealClearPolitics poll averages had Vietnam war veteran John McCain leading the Republican field in New Hampshire at 31.3 percent, with former Massachusetts governor Romney at 28.8 percent, ex-New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani at 10 percent and Huckabee trailing at 9.5 percent.

McCain earned a virtual tie for third place in Iowa considering he did very little campaigning there and he is expected to do well in New Hampshire, which he won in 2000 before falling to Bush.

The Clinton camp has argued New Hampshire will be a more favorable test for her chances, as a straight primary election, rather than the quirky horsetrading of the caucuses, which despite record breaking numbers on Thursday, have a comparatively low turnout.

The Democratic debate will feature Clinton, Obama, Edwards and former US ambassador to the UN Bill Richardson.

The Republican encounter groups Romney, McCain, Huckabee, former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani, congressman Ron Paul and former senator and screen star Fred Thompson.
