Besides immediate issues of survival, the floods will have a lasting effect on many Africans' food supplies because so many crops were washed away.
"A lot of farmers have lost their crops and the harvest was due in a month's time," said Stephanie Savariaud, spokeswoman for the UN World Food Program in West Africa.
