"An operation has been launched there involving US and Iraqi troops along the Euphrates valley," Major Alayne Conway, spokeswoman for the US military said.

Conway said the operation was targeting an "enemy sanctuary" in and around the town, south of Baghdad.

In the southern oil city of Basra, around 300 oil industry workers gathered to protest a draft law that they said would allow foreigners to pillage the country's wealth.
