Twelve people, including eight children, were taken to hospitals on Tuesday after a school bus was struck by a stolen sport utility vehicle (SUV) that the police were chasing in Queens, New York.
The children, ages 10 to 13, who were on their way home from school at the time of the accident, were taken to either North Shore University Hospital/Manhasset or Long Island Jewish Medical Center. The severity of their injuries was unclear on Tuesday night, but the police said none appeared to be life threatening.
The bus driver, a bus aide, the driver of the stolen car and an officer who chased the suspect on foot after the collision were also hospitalized with minor injuries at North Shore University Hospital/Manhasset, according to the police.
Investigators said the collision occurred at about 2:30pm on Douglaston Parkway near Van Zandt Avenue in Little Neck. The crash ended a pursuit that began when one or more officers in a patrol car spotted the stolen vehicle, a Nissan Murano, on Cross Island Parkway near Northern Boulevard. The SUV had been reported stolen at 2pm as part of home burglary nearby, investigators said.
At first, the police said, the patrol car simply followed the SUV to observe. But at some point the pursuit became a high-speed chase.
