HK pro-democracy protesters involved in clash with police

"This is a rigged, small-circle election but I think in respect of the political culture and landscape [in Hong Kong] we have achieved something."

    Alan Leong, Hong Kong legislator

Pro-democracy protesters clashed with police yesterday as an elite election committee gathered to choose Hong Kong's leader for the next five years.

Several protesters were forcibly carried away by police as members of the largely pro-Beijing committee arrived at the Asia World Expo venue next to the city's international airport to cast their votes.

Dozens of demonstrators shouting slogans demanding full democracy, and denouncing the committee selection process, tried to charge through police lines to reach the venue.

They then sat in the road, forcing arriving election committee members to get out of their cars and walk to the exhibition hall cast their votes.

Among the demonstrators yesterday was pro-democracy Legislator Emily Lau (劉慧卿) who said: "This is a very sad day -- a shameful day for Hong Kong. Most Hong Kong people do not have a vote [in this election] and even though 800 people can vote, the result is known months in advance. This is terrible."

"This is a rigged, small-circle election but I think in respect of the political culture and landscape [in Hong Kong] we have achieved something," candidate Alan Leong (梁家傑) said.
