The man had been found in the Lin Yue restaurant in Sittensen, a small town south of Hamburg, in the early hours of Monday among the bodies of three men and three women who had been tied up and shot dead. Police said his injuries were so serious, they had had little hope that he would survive. All the victims are believed to be of Asian origin. Police said they were of four different nationalities, but gave no further details. The owners of the restaurant, a 36-year-old man and his 32-year-old wife, were among the dead. A two-year-old girl survived the bloodbath unharmed. Police said it was possible she had been in living accommodation above the restaurant at the time of the shootings and it was unlikely she saw what happened. Police appealed to media to keep her identity secret for her safety. The motive for the crime remained a mystery.
The people of Sittensen, a town of around 6,000 people, were shocked by the killings.
