China and India in talks to safeguard endangered tigers

    AFP, NEW DELHI
    Saturday, Nov 04, 2006, Page 4

India, home to a dwindling tiger population, and China, which has a black market for tiger parts used in traditional medicine, are discussing an accord to save the endangered big cat, a senior official said yesterday.

A Chinese delegation was in New Delhi last week to finalize details of the accord, said the environment ministry official, who wished to remain unnamed.

A report in the Indian Express yesterday said key elements of the pact included better border vigilance to clamp down on illegal trafficking of tiger parts and training Chinese personnel in India.

The Asian giants have been under fire for not clamping down on tiger poaching, with conservationists alleging collusion between poachers, government officials and buyers.
