UK cops nab 24th London bomb plotter

LIQUID THREAT As airports scrambled to manage the chaos in the foiled attack's wake, a row eupted about whether Asians and Muslims should be more closely scrutinized

Meanwhile, at London's airports, conditions were still bad, though not as bad as in recent days.

Starting on Tuesday, passengers were allowed to take one piece of carry-on luggage -- which could include laptop computers and cellphones but no liquids -- easing the pain of travel somewhat.

British Airways announced, though, that it had misplaced or not returned 10,000 checked bags since the security alert began last week, about half of which were piled up at various airports. It did not say where the other 5,000 bags were. The airline also said that it had canceled some 700 flights -- out of nearly 2,400 cancellations from all airlines -- since Thursday.

Explanations

British investigators were to explain to a judge in a closed-door hearing yesterday why the 24 suspects should be kept in custody without charge.

The hearing scheduled for yesterday afternoon in London addresses the cases of 22 suspects arrested in the initial sweep. Under new terrorism laws, the suspects can be held for as long as 28 days as investigators prepare charges.
