A 15-year-old Hong Kong schoolgirl has been sent to a detention center after throwing her stillborn baby out the window of a high-rise apartment, a news report said yesterday.
The girl gave birth secretly in June in the toilet of her grandparents' apartment, flushed away the placenta and the umbilical cord and threw the baby out the toilet window.
A post mortem examination found the baby was dead before it had been born, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) said.
At a hearing at Kowloon City Juvenile Court on Wednesday, the girl, who could not be named because of her age, admitted a charge of concealing a birth.
The magistrate ordered her to be sent to a girls' detention center for nine months and to be put on probation for 18 months.
He also said she would need psychiatric counseling.
The court heard that the girl's parents and grandparents knew nothing of her pregnancy.
She told the court she conceived after having sex with a stranger.
The girl's grandmother found blood stains on her granddaughter's trousers after the baby was born on June 25.
The teen confessed what had happened later when her mother arrived to visit her.
Police and paramedics were called in and the baby's body was found outside the apartment block 12 hours after she gave birth, according to the SCMP.
