Terror suspect Bashir to be released from prison

AP , JAKARTA

The alleged head of the regional terror group Jemaah Islamiyah is being released from prison tomorrow, a move that will likely energize Indonesia's radical fringe but not directly lead to a heightened risk of more attacks, experts said.

Abu Bakar Bashir is expected to receive a hero's welcome from hundreds of supporters when he walks from Jakarta's Cipinang prison after serving 26 months for giving his blessing to the 2002 Bali nightclub bombings that killed 202 people.

The US and Australia have long maintained the slender, white-haired 68-year-old cleric was the "emir" or head of Jemaah Islamiyah -- blamed for a series of terrorist attacks in the world's most populous Muslim nation.
