Hong Kong police offer big reward for help in murder case

DPA , HONG KONG

Hong Kong police are offering a US$90,000 reward for help in catching the killer of a Thai-Chinese tourist whose body was found tied up in a room of the city's tax headquarters last October.

Charitar Kamolnoranath, 41, was found on top of a 3m high air conditioning unit in a machine room on the 33rd floor of Revenue Tower in Wanchai on Oct. 24.

Her hands were tied behind her back with two pieces of black plastic strap. She was barefoot and her high-heeled black shoes had been placed next to her head.

She had a single stab wound although a postmortem examination was inconclusive as to the exact cause of death.

The reward comes after investigators have failed to crack the mystery which has several baffling elements including how Charitar's body was dumped in the machine room of a building where hundreds of civil servants work but only a few workers have access to.

Charitar was visiting from Thailand with her boyfriend, an Australian cameraman who was in the territory to make a murder mystery film.

She was last seen as she boarded a hotel shuttle bus in Yaumatei on the afternoon of Oct. 12. She is believed to have been heading for the Film Services Department on the 40th floor of Revenue Tower.

Her body was found by one of a team of workmen carrying out repairs to the machine room. There were no signs of a struggle suggesting she had been put in the room while unconscious or dead.

Her handbag containing her passport, a few hundred Hong Kong dollars, two mobile phones, two bank credit cards and a pair of sunglasses were missing, however she was still wearing her jewellery and an expensive watch.

The reward -- one of the highest police can offer in Hong Kong -- is being offered jointly by the police and two members of the public.
