One thing Chavez has going for his revolution is oil, and the windfall profits from record-high prices. Gasoline in Venezuela costs just US$0.17 cents a gallon. While unemployment stands at 12 percent, the economy is growing, and new car sales have increased sharply.
"You have to strip yourself of individualism," he said in a televised address. "You have to strip yourself of the yearnings for personal wealth. You have to strip yourself of egotism. You need to be, simply, useful."
