Endorsement seen as victory for Arroyo

IMPEACHMENT Although opposition figures did not take part in the meeting that voted to endorse only a weak charge against the president, there was no sign of mass protests

AP , MANILA, PHILIPPINES

A private lawyer, Ernesto Francisco, filed a petition Wednesday asking the Supreme Court to stop the justice committee from continuing with the hearing. He said all the complaints should be heard, and none barred.

Pro- and anti-impeachment groups who tried to enter the House clashed Wednesday when militant Akbayan party members were stopped by Arroyo supporters from entering the building.

The opposition claimed that the issue was being ramrodded through because of Arroyo's trip to the US next month.

"The president wants to leave for abroad without the sword of Damocles hanging over her head," opposition Representative Rolex Suplico said.
