Uzbek troops arrest rebel leaders

CRACKDOWN Government forces occupied the border town of Korasuv and then arrested three leaders who reportedly had announced a plan to rule by Islamic law

AP , KORASUV, UZBEKISTAN

One trigger for the uprising in Korasuv was the authorities' closure of the border with Kyrgyzstan two years ago. After Saturday's revolt, town residents quickly restored the footbridge spanning a river separating the two countries, and of traders flooded to a big market on the Kyrgyz side. The Uzbek authorities kept the bridge open after retaking the town yesterday in an apparent bid to avoid angering the population.
