Darfur's main rebel Sudan Liberation Army, however, was doubtful. "We have not much hope that this will solve the crisis in Darfur," said Adam Ali Shogar, spokesman for the Sudan Liberation Army.
"[The Naivasha peace deal] is a good sign, but I think that the government has not yet taken a political decision in solving the problem in Darfur peacefully," Shogar said by telephone.
About 70,000 people have died in Darfur from disease, hunger and attacks by pro-government militia called Janjaweed. Nearly two million are believed to have fled their homes in Darfur since February 2003, when the conflict started after two rebel groups took up arms to fight for greater autonomy.
