A fourth British soldier has come forward to tell of regular abuse of Iraqi prisoners and of "trophy photographs" taken of the beatings meted out, the Daily Mirror reported yesterday.
The tabloid, which began publishing a series of allegations with pictures a week ago, said "soldier D" acknowledged taking part in the beatings for fear of being ostracized and was too frightened to tell his story to military police.
It carried a front-page picture allegedly provided by the soldier from the Queen's Lancashire Regiment -- the regiment at the center of the allegations -- showing a soldier photographing a bound captive with bloodied teeth in the back of an armored personnel carrier.
Soldier D told the Mirror: "There are no rules out there. I saw the man dragged into the vehicle, beaten up, kicked and punched. It lasted about a minute.
"I took the picture as I opened the doors of the vehicle and could see dirt on his shirt and blood on his teeth," he added.
The unnamed man said his fellow soldiers took photos and video footage to look tough and prove to friends at home what had happened.
He added orders had been issued to get rid of the pictures.
Soldier D, who is still with the regiment, told the Mirror he had been "no angel," saying he had taken part in the brutality.
Doubt has been cast on the authenticity of photographs published by the Mirror, some experts pointing to anomalies in the equipment of the soldiers depicted.
But Mirror editor Piers Morgan is standing by allegations of widespread abuse and torture by British forces in southern Iraq, calling the published revelations "the tip of the iceberg."

Nearly half of China’s major cities are suffering “moderate to severe” levels of subsidence, putting millions of people at risk of flooding, especially as sea levels rise, according to a study of nationwide satellite data released yesterday. The authors of the paper, published by the journal Science, found that 45 percent of China’s urban land was sinking faster than 3mm per year, with 16 percent at more than 10mm per year, driven not only by declining water tables, but also the sheer weight of the built environment. With China’s urban population already in excess of 900 million people, “even a small portion

HYPOCRISY? The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday asked whether Biden was talking about China or the US when he used the word ‘xenophobic’ US President Joe Biden on Wednesday called for a hike in steel tariffs on China, accusing Beijing of cheating as he spoke at a campaign event in Pennsylvania. Biden accused China of xenophobia, too, in a speech to union members in Pittsburgh. “They’re not competing, they’re cheating. They’re cheating and we’ve seen the damage here in America,” Biden said. Chinese steel companies “don’t need to worry about making a profit because the Chinese government is subsidizing them so heavily,” he said. Biden said he had called for the US Trade Representative to triple the tariff rates for Chinese steel and aluminum if Beijing was
