In a study to appear in December in the journal Zoobiology, Nyhus found that seven people had been killed by tigers in the US from 1998 to 2001, and 27 people had been injured severely enough to require hospitalization. In comparison, according to estimates by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 22 to 25 people are killed by dogs each year.
Even seasoned professionals like Horn, who was attacked while on stage alone with the tiger and is still in critical condition in a Las Vegas hospital, are never entirely out of danger.
