"I am searching for my father. We never heard from him since he was led away from our home in 1991 by militias of the Baath Party," said Matham Ali amid great sobs.
He added that this was his second visit to the site.
The stench of the site proves too much for some. It is testimony to the brutality of Saddam's regime, they say.
Witnesses from the nearby Khatoumiya village said that they actually saw Saddam's men bring the victims to the site nearly 12 years ago.
"They were blindfolded and their hands were tied behind their backs," said one witness.
"They were summarily executed," added another.
Some of the skulls appeared to have bullet holes in them.
