STAFF WRITER, WITH AGENCIES

Initial results of a poll conducted by the DPP on Monday evening show that 64 percent of Taiwan's people support President Chen Shui-bian's (陳水扁) "one country on each side" remarks on cross-strait relations, a DPP official said yesterday. DPP Deputy Secretary-General You Ying-lung (游盈隆) said the poll results demonstrate that the majority of the people support Chen's remarks. You said that international opinion and media reports have not been very negative and that the response from the people of Taiwan has generally been good. He said the final results of the poll will be announced after further compilation work. The initial results also reveal that only 27 percent of the respondents do not support Chen's remark. You added that the initial poll results show a high level of support for the resolution regarding Taiwan's future that was approved by the DPP at a party congress in 1999.
