    Tourism: Foreign visitors down

Nearly 1.29 million foreign arrivals were posted in the first half of this year, down 7.11 percent from the same period of a year ago, according to statistics released recently by the Tourism Bureau. Affected by the May 25 crash of China Airlines flight CI611 in the Taiwan Strait, tourist arrivals fell by 12.1 percent in June alone year-on-year, the bureau said. In terms of tourist arrivals, a total of 516,311 tourists visited Taiwan in the first six months of the year, a decrease of more than 10 percent from the year-earlier level, while a plunge of 21.83 percent was registered in June from the previous year. The bureau had expected to see a 10 percent growth in foreign arrivals to push the total to 2.9 million for the whole of this year, but had to adjust the target to a 5 percent increase following the CAL crash.
