Nation triumphs in physics

Taiwan won three gold medals, one silver and one bronze at the 2002 International Physics Olympiad in Bali, Indonesia, officials at the Ministry of Education said yesterday. A total of 296 high school students from 67 countries took part in the nine-day physics contest, which ended yesterday. The three gold medals went to Kao Hsien-ching (高憲慶), Liu Yu-sheng (劉于聖) and Lee Hung-hsi (李鴻禧) of Chien Kuo Senior High School in Taipei. The silver medal was won by Lin Sheng-hsuan (林聖軒) from Taichung First Senior High School, while the bronze medal was given to Chen Chien-yu (陳建宇), also from Chien Kuo Senior High School. Speaking at the closing ceremony, Chien Maw-fa (簡茂發), president of National Taiwan Normal University, announced that Taiwan will host next year's olympiad from July 12 to July 21.
