    Rail service resumes

    STAFF WRITER
    Monday, Jul 22, 2002, Page 3

Full service was restored yesterday on a line that was shut down on Saturday following an accident in which a train hit a truck at a level crossing, the Taiwan Railroad Administration said yesterday. The accident, in which 17 people were injured, also damaged power poles and damaged barriers at the Tung Ying Li (東鶯里) level crossing, which remains closed. The damaged power poles did not affect the running of express trains, which resumed service late Saturday afternoon. The administration said it would ask the truck company -- Hsian Chieh (翔捷通運公司) -- for compensation because they believe that the truck driver had tried to cross the track without making sure the road ahead was clear of traffic and the truck may have been overloaded with steel frames. The administration said it would calculate losses from the accident today, although it estimated they could be more than NT$10 million.
