A team of US submarine experts has visited Taiwan to discuss eight conventional submarines Washington has agreed to sell the nation, a Chinese-language newspaper said yesterday. The US military group, which flew into Taipei last week, asked Taiwan "to specify its options on items including the type of submarine to purchase, its weapons system, power and torpedo," the newspaper said. The US group advised the navy that the German-built Dolphin-class submarines now serving the Israeli navy could be considered, the paper said. National Security Council deputy chief Antonio Chiang (¦¿¬K¨k) inspected one on a clandestine trip to Israel, according to the report. Military sources have said the navy favors Germany's 209-class submarines or Dutch-designed Moray submarines. But both countries have said they would not get involved in arms sales to Taiwan.
