Citing a recent poll that shows 80 percent of its interviewees agreed with meting out severer punishment to sex offenders, a criminology professor yesterday said that a registration-and-publicizing system for convicted sex offenders would get support from the public. Professor Frank Huang (黃富源), the dean of student affairs at Central Police University, however warned that, as the registration system may infringe upon human rights, the government shouldn't adopt the system without adopting related measures to go along with it. Huang made the remark in a seminar organized by a women's rights group yesterday. He cited a recent poll on sex crime which found that between 70 and 80 percent of the interviewees agreed that the government should adopt a heavier penalty system against such crimes. Respondents even think that the offenders should wear "sex offender" labels on their clothes.
