Foundation has birthday

STAFF WRITER

Women's rights activists across the nation gathered yesterday at a fundraising party in Taipei to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Awakening Foundation (婦女新知基金會) -- the most influential women's rights group in Taiwan, local media reported. Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) attended the party yesterday and expressed her admiration for the foundation. In 1982, a group of Taiwanese women founded a publishing company to promote women's rights. In 1987, they established the Awakening Foundation to "raise public awareness of women's issues, to fight for women's rights and to improve the social conditions of women."
