Opposition legislators worry that the Cabinet, once the legislature has passed the regulations on how to check the character and loyalty of government employees (公務人員品德及忠誠特殊查核辦法), will lay down detailed rules expanding the list of departments that will be subject to these checks, as well as the items to be part of the check, saying that this may allow leading officials to purge dissenting staff and cause a return to the days of White Terror. PFP Legislator Huang Yi-chiao (黃義交) said that opposition legislators have decided to propose the elimination of the section in the amended Civil Servants Employment Law allowing the Cabinet to perform the loyalty check, and that these matters instead should be handled in accordance with existing criminal legislation and the Constitution.
