Chen calls for unity

President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) sought to mend ethnic divisions in Taiwan yesterday, saying that all 23 million residents of the country are "sons and daughters of Taiwan," regardless of their origin. Chen made the appeal in an article appearing in an Internet newspaper known as President A-bian's e-Paper. His appeal came amid a mounting trend of political polarization between "mainlanders," who moved to Taiwan from China after 1949 along with the KMT government, and "native" Taiwanese, who have called Taiwan home for four centuries. Noting that each citizen is an integral part of the nation, Chen said no single citizen should be discriminated against simply because of his or her origin. Chen, who just marked his second anniversary in office Monday, said political reform, government restructuring, economic revitalization and social welfare reform are all high on his administration's working agenda.
