A researcher at Academia Sinica's Division of Biomedical Sciences has been elected president of the International Federation of Psychiatric Epidemiology, a spokesman for Taiwan's highest research institute announced yesterday. Cheng Tai-an's (鄭泰安) election during an international scientific meeting in the Canadian city of Edmonton from May 12 to May 15 sets a precedent for a non-European or American scholar to serve as IFPE president, the spokesman said. The spokesman added that Cheng was also elected IFPE secretary in 1999, when Academia Sinica hosted the 8th IFPE International Academic Meeting attended by more than 400 scholars from more than 30 countries.
