A three-month-old boy died early yesterday from injuries caused by a television that fell on him when a strong earthquake jolted the north the day before. Huang Po-lin (黃柏霖) was the only known casualty from the 6.2-magnitude quake, with an epicenter about 9km off the coast of Ilan County. When the baby arrived at the hospital Wednesday, his heart had stopped and physicians spent 15 hours trying to save him, said Wang Wen-bing, a neurosurgeon at Poai Hospital in Ilan. The baby was lying near the television in his home when the quake hit. He suffered a severe concussion and internal bleeding, the doctor said. The Central Weather Bureau said Wednesday's quake was an aftershock from a deadly tremor in March. A 6.8-magnitude quake on March 31 killed five construction workers in Taipei and damaged hundreds of homes across the county.
