Fires blaze in Taichung

STAFF WRITER

Premier Yu Shyi-kun yesterday named Council of Agriculture Chairman Fan Cheng-chung (范振宗) to head attempts to put out two forest fires raging in central Taiwan. Fan yesterday briefed Yu about the state of the fires at the council's No. 37 and No. 38 forest sites along the Tachia Creek (大甲溪) in Taichung County. There are already 380 firefighters tackling the blaze, but Fan has asked the military for assistance. At press time yesterday, the fire, which began at around 10:40am on Saturday, had destroyed more than 100 hectares of trees in the Shei-pa National Park (雪霸國家公園). The fires are threatening a protected area for the Formosan landlocked salmon.
