Lu calls on female doctors

Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) appealed yesterday to an international group of women doctors for support for Taiwan's bid to join the WHO as an observer. Speaking at the opening of the Seventh Western Pacific Regional Congress of Medical Women's International Association , Lu told the 150 women doctors attending the conference that Taiwan's achievements in public health care justify the nation's admittance into the WHO. She urged the association to join the US and the EU in endorsing Taiwan's bid. Lu said that women's participation in society is becoming more and more widespread, noting that about 11 percent of doctors and 25 percent of dentists in Taiwan are women. She also expressed her thanks to women doctors for their contributions to the health of Taiwan's citizens. Foreign Minister Eugene Chien (簡又新) also made a case for Taiwan's WHO bid at the conference.
