US visit for Chen a goal

Making it possible for President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) to visit the US in his capacity as president of Taiwan is an important goal, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Eugene Chien (簡又新) yesterday. The US does not allow official visits to Washington by high-ranking politicians from Taiwan. Chen and Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) have only been allowed to make brief transit stops in the US. Chien also said that the ministry was not involved in lobbying for permission for Chen to visit the US, specifically Washington. He said that efforts in the US have been spearheaded by a number of Congress members who have long been friendly to Taiwan. Chen has already expressed his willingness to pay an official visit to the US, Chien said, adding that the foreign ministry is studying ways that could lead to making the visit to the US a reality.
