Two nations, Lee says

STAFF WRITER

Taiwan and China are two separate, independent countries, and Beijing has no right to claim sovereignty over the island, former president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) said yesterday. Lee told a rally at Miaoli there have long been two countries across the Taiwan Strait. "We have two separate, independent countries," he pointed out, "and Beijing has no sovereignty over Taiwan." Over 200 supporters gathered to inaugurate a chapter of the Friends of Lee Teng-hui Club in Miaoli. Earlier, Lee spoke on "Taiwanization" at an inaugural meeting of another chapter in Hsinchu, calling for public support for the movement, which he described as a natural outgrowth of democratization. Democracy and "Taiwanization" go hand in hand, Lee said.
