Veteran attempts suicide

A veteran who was cheated out of his life's savings tried to kill himself by driving a nail into his head, local media reported yesterday. The 80-year old man, only identified as Lu, took a brick and slammed the nail into his head on Thursday morning after fellow veterans bamboozled him out of NT$1.5 million (US$43,000). Some 12 hours later he called emergency services to complain about a "severe headache." Doctors removed the nail in a five-hour operation, but it is uncertain whether the man will survive due to heavy blood loss, the report said.
