Connecticut backs Taiwan

STAFF WRITER

The General Assembly of Connecticut passed a resolution Thursday supporting the participation of Taiwan in the WHO. "In light of all the benefits that Taiwan's participation in the WHO could bring to the state of health not only in Taiwan, but also regionally and globally, members of the Connecticut General Assembly express their strong support for an observer status for Taiwan in the WHO," the resolution said. The US Congress and the European Parliament have also passed resolutions in support of Taiwan's bid. A number of US states have also adopted similar positions. The biggest stumbling block to these efforts is opposition from Beijing. "Political consideration ought not to play a role in international health issues or be used to exclude members from the WHO," said the Connecticut resolution.
